Why Write Yet Another Fitness Blog?
Beyond the joy and satisfaction of transforming lives through personal training and fitness boot camps, I wanted an outlet for sharing my perspective and expertise to a broader audience. Finding my voice took time. In the vast overwhelming sea of health and fitness information overload, I had to decide what I stand for.
Do I just regurgitate random fitness factoids on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis because that’s what the majority of other fitness “gurus” are doing?
Do I provide tips for rapid weight loss because that sells?
Do I publish healthy recipes in my newsletter despite the fact that I use my oven for storage and can’t remember the last time I prepared a meal that had more than three ingredients (or that wasn’t pre-made)?
Do I make a whole bunch of exercise videos of my own regardless of the fact that anyone can Google the words “exercise videos” and find thousands of professionally produced videos online? (don’t get me wrong, I intend to keep making those but with a specific end goal in mind)
Do I create an alter ego who appears to epitomize a lifestyle of healthy living, dedication to fitness, and unbridled success as a
less than honest platform from which to take hardened positions; many of which may actually run counter to my own daily actions – because that might sell?
I can safely say that I attempted all of the above at some point. Thankfully, with the help of much trial and error, consistent and honest feedback from a great many wonderful people in my life, and a healthy dose of humility, I have managed to crystallize my voice in the cacophonous health and happiness shouting match.
Its pretty simple actually. My mission is to help as many people as possible integrate fitness into their busy lives. Everything I say and do is driven by three guiding principles:
1. Honesty – I’m always going to be myself. Period. No more recipes I’ve never tried, tips for avoiding the temptation to purchase too many boxes of Girl Scout cookies, or fast track plans to getting back in your “skinny jeans.” That’s just not who I am nor is it the leader I want to be. I’ll share my stories, express my opinions, and provide a perspective in the process of imparting what will mostly be useful information and knowledge that I’m hopeful will improve your life. When I’m wrong I’ll let you know and when you think I’m wrong, please let me know. I’ll listen. Sometimes I’ll say “let’s both do as I say, not as I do.” Other times, I’ll encourage you to “do as I do.”
2. Compassion – We all want to be happier and improved health directly impacts our level of happiness. This drives everything else. I love everyone – or at least I’m trying – and I work hard at loving myself. I want everyone who hears my voice to try to do the same. You’re not too fat. You’re not too skinny. You’re not too fast or too slow. You’re not too big or too small. And neither is anyone else. Get those thoughts out of your head. No judgments here. We all have areas in our life we need to change. We all have our own motivations for improving our health and I will from time to time address some of those directly. We all succeed and we all fail, but the the end game is long term health and happiness. Staying on that road is what matters most.
3. Humor – Compassion and honesty when combined under the wrong circumstances can sometimes result in taking ourselves WAY too seriously. Left unchecked even a little self righteousness can sneak into the equation. We can laugh at ourselves and each other with love and compassion and we ought to – regularly. In a world with Shake Weights and magic shoes, how can we not laugh… a lot? Also, staying healthy is much easier with a smile on your face.
I have much to give and to share. I reconstituted and refurbished this blog to share, with an honest, compassionate, and (hopefully) humorous voice, my growing expertise in the areas of fitness, nutrition, and wellness to anyone who might benefit.
